Air Ambulance rescue drama as mountain hero hurt in sledging accident

A 21 year old member of Bolton's Mountain Rescue appeared to suffer serious back injuries when his sledge crashed on a steep section of Rivington Pike.

With temperatures of around minus four, other colleagues gave the man pain killing gas and carried him on a stretcher to the foot of the hill.

He was picked up by the North West Air Ambulance Service helicopter, which took him to hospital in Preston.
