Air ambulance heroes flying back on UK screens in 2012

The popular BBC series ‘Helicopter Heroes’ is set to return to the TV screens of UK viewers in 2012, after a new series was commissioned by the country’s national broadcaster.

The fly on the wall documentary series has proven a great hit since it was first aired back in 2007. Now with series’ across the world and in Scandinavia, fans of European Air Ambulances will now also be able watch the UK series through the iPlayer service from the BBC website.

The series follows the exploits of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance as they serve the largest county of the country. In the five years the series has been running, there have been some dramatic events covered.

Most notable perhaps was the footage covered of the devastating Cumbria shooting in the summer of 2010.

There was also a strange first for the series, as it filmed a patient having a heart attack; thought to be the first such event in TV history. What was even stranger about that particular event is it was an air ambulance dispatcher for the YAA who was suffering the cardiac arrest.

The film, which showed CPR and a defibrillator being used, is now used for paramedics, police, firefighters and medical aircrew training programmes.

To create the much lauded atmosphere in each show, a member of the BBC team flies on every mission, whilst the production team is based at Leeds Bradford Airport where the YAA is based too.

A global hit, the programme has been responsible for a raising awareness of the vital service air ambulances provide throughout the world, and, generated thousands of pounds in donations as a result.
