Darlington fan thanks air ambulance volunteers for saving his life

The Air Ambulance has received praise from a football fan after was brought back to life when he collapsed whilst making his way back home after a match. Both his breathing and his heart stopped before the rescuers saved his life.

Mr Porritt was feeling off colour on the way back home with his son and daughter-in-law when Darlington played Mansfield Town last September.

Daughter-in-law, Mandy, a registered nurse, saw the signs and gave him treatment before the air ambulance arrived.

Upon arrival of the ambulance, the road was closed to provide space for its landing. Mr Porritt was treated by the two Air Ambulance volunteers, who sedated him within a quarter of an hour. They then transported him in just a few minutes to The James Cook University Hospital.

The workers had hum breathing and restarted his heart before he was sedated with anaesthetic.

It is unusual for someone to make a recovery from a cardiac arrest in anywhere outside of a hospital.

The wife of the former hospital patient, Janet Porritt, was delighted that she had the chance to thank the men who rescued her husband.

“How do you thank someone for saving your husband’s life? It is very hard to put into words the gratitude I feel. It is nice to come here and say thank you properly. It is very important that people raise funds for the Great North Air Ambulance. They provide a vital service – and you never know when you might need it”.
