When you book an air ambulance from Spain, the type of aircraft we’ll send will depend on the medical condition of the patient who will be travelling. For services from Spain, we typically use one of the following aircraft:

What is the Aircraft Luggage Allowance?

IAS Medical take pride in the high standards we set for patient care.

The air ambulance aircraft we use are fitted with complete medical stretcher systems that incorporate medical oxygen, suction and electrical power outlets for medical equipment.

Therefore, space on board the aircraft is limited and it is recommended that luggage is restricted to one piece of hand luggage per person weighing not more than 15 kgs.

Can Companions Fly on the Air Ambulance too?

A question that is often asked by family members is, “Can I fly on the Air Ambulance too?” The answer, under normal circumstances, is “Yes”!

All IAS Medical air ambulances have the capacity to comfortably carry one companion with the patient.

However, IAS Medical recommends that critical ill patients travel alone to avoid worry and distress for the companion.

The decision to carry a companion is one that rests with our Medical Director and depends on the medical condition of the patient.

Where do I Board the Aircraft?

When repatriating a patient with IAS Medical you will not have to board the aircraft via the main airport terminal and endure all that is associated with it.

IAS Medical will engage the services of an executive handling agent at the airport of departure and arrival. The handling agent is employed to ensure that the transfer between ground ambulance to air ambulance and vice versa is quick, seamless and as easy as possible.

When the ground ambulance conveying the patient arrives at the airport of departure, it will be met by the handling agent, and seamlessly escorted directly to the awaiting air ambulance where the medical team will ensure the patient is transferred safely and comfortably.

The same service is provided to you as a companion and any security requirements will be dealt with by the IAS Medical handling agent.

The cost of an air ambulance will depend on your individual circumstances, with prices depending on the following factors:

The cost of medical crew

The overall cost of booking an air ambulance depends on various factors, including the number of medical staff required and the expertise needed to support the patient’s medical needs.

As an indication of how this affects the overall cost of an air ambulance, the cost of recruiting medical experts is as follows:

  • Flight Surgeons: £700 per day
  • Doctors: £700 per day
  • Nurses: £350 per day
  • Paramedics: £350 per day

The cost of our aircraft

Prices will depend on the type of aircraft you need to book, according to the clinical needs of the patient, the size of aircraft required and the equipment needed on board. Prices will also vary depending on how many people would like to accompany the patient on their journey, although this may not be possible depending on the patient’s medical condition.

For non-serious cases, there is often a choice of aircraft, in which case we will use the most cost-effective aircraft available.

The cost of airport landing fees

All airports charge landing and aircraft handling fees, which will impact on the overall cost of your medical transport. There may also be extension fees to keep the airport open, as well as aircraft de-icing fees.

We provide air ambulances from major airports right across the world, so we can get as close as possible to the patient’s hospital ward. We then use an RAF airport for flights into London, which helps to keep air ambulance costs as manageable as possible.
